Punk rock lives forever, at least in Leningrad

Workers of the world, get loaded! An Old Riga favourite has moved to a larger space in the city centre, but have no fear. Leningrad has brought all of its Soviet era paintings, books, vintage wallpaper, antique radios and a bust or two of the infamous bearded commie with the bald head. The bar, which is stocked with bottles of Scottish beers by Brew Dog, Latvian cider and plenty of hard liquor, can be found to the left, while the concert hall is just to the right. When live bands aren’t playing in the evening you can expect a steady diet of eccentric as well as classic alternative rock. A food menu is also available. —by InYourPocket

Rock'n'Roll till the dawn

Leningrad Cafe is no just a cafe any more — it serves Latvian beers as well as food for the hungry party goers in the evenings and and others during daytime.

Since moving to the new location on Valdemāra Street 4, the revolutionary vanguard of the masses have fulfilled their dream and are able to offer the starving, the hungry or just the curios the perfect daily meal for just a couple of Euros more. Gone are the days of the Old Town location – the new location just over the City Canal offers more space for concerts, private parties and kitchen for food.

In Leningrad everyone is equal, the bar staff are the most equal ones. With more to offer, the new Leningrad is reminding us that the punks are not dead, beer still tastes as good as 20 year ago, Marx is still valuable literature, and Lenin actually was sporting a mohawk – ok, maybe not, but we like the concept. The eclectic Soviet kitsch interior of the place is worth visiting even just for a look, it was used as a backdrop in at least one movie too.

Important: in Leningrad Cafe they do not celebrate Halloween — so no pumpkins on 31st of October.

Russia is still entrenched in Latvian culture, most notably in the number of people who still speak or understand the language. Nevertheless, it's something of a surprise to find a venue that harkens back to the good/bad old days (delete as applicable) of the Soviet Union. It's a retro look, resplendent with relics of day to day life before independence, but with modern music and drinks that are not too badly priced. There is of course no real cast backwards to the 1980s; nobody is evicted from their chair on false charges, it's pretty easy to get hold of a telephone (assuming you have a mobile), and the money in your pocket will be worth the same when you walk out as it was when you arrived. There will just be less of it. VIA Local Life.
